چکیده

To clarify the upper mantle structure and dynamics of Kamchatka subduction zone, we conduct Rayleigh-wave phase-velocity azimuthal anisotropy tomography beneath using amplitude phase data teleseismic fundamental mode Rayleigh-waves at periods 25–150 s. With obtained anisotropic model, a 3-D shear-wave velocity (Vs) model is determined down to ?300 km depth. Mantle Flow at a Slab Edge: Seismic Anisotropy in the Kamchatka Region

The junction of the Aleutian Island and the Kamchatka peninsula defines a sharp turn in the boundary of the Pacific and North American plates, terminating the subduction zones of the northwest Pacific. The regional pattern of shear-wave birefringence near the junction indicates that trench-parallel strain follows the seismogenic Benioff zone, but rotates to trench-normal beyond the slab edge. A...

Shear wave splitting and mantle flow associated with the deflected Pacific slab beneath northeast Asia

[1] A total of 361 SKS and five local S wave splitting measurements obtained at global and regional seismic network stations in NE China and Mongolia are used to infer the characteristics of mantle fabrics beneath northeast Asia. Fast polarization directions at most of the stations in the western part of the study area are found to be consistent with the strike of local geological features. The...

Slab‐plume interaction beneath the Pacific Northwest

[1] The Pacific Northwest has undergone complex plate reorganization and intense tectono‐volcanic activity to the east during the Cenozoic (last 65 Ma). Here we show new high‐resolution tomographic images obtained using shear and compressional data from the ongoing USArray deployment that demonstrate first that there is a continuous, whole‐ mantle plume beneath the Yellowstone Snake River Plain...

Upper and mid‐mantle anisotropy beneath the Tonga slab

[1] Measurements of source‐side splitting in S waves from events within the Tonga slab reveal anisotropy in the upper and mid‐mantle beneath the slab. We observed splitting for events originating at both upper mantle and transition zone depths. Anisotropic fast directions ( ) are trench parallel or sub‐parallel for both upper mantle and transition zone events. Delay times (dt) decrease with dep...

Sub-slab seismic anisotropy and mantle flow beneath the Caribbean and Scotia subduction zones Effects of slab morphology and kinematics

Subduction systems are vitally important to plate tectonics and mantle convection, but questions remain about many aspects of subduction dynamics, particularly the nature of sub-slab mantle flow. Observations of seismic anisotropy can shed light on the pattern of mantle flow in subduction systems, but major uncertainties remain regarding the interpretation of sub-slab anisotropy. Here, we prese...
